The documentary exhibition presents in photos and publications the visits of Shostakovich in Bulgaria – in Ruse, Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. There are exhibited photos, recorded his events in Varna, his meetings with Bulgarian composers in Sofia, his visit to the Bulgarian State Conservatory, moments, related to the first production of the opera “Katerina Izmailova” in Bulgaria, realized with the presence of the composer in 1965.

Slaveykov” – Varna.

In the process of the event and preparation of the digital catalogue of the festivals in Varna in 2020 in the fund of the Varna State Archive were found and identified about 30 photographic frames, showing the visit of Shostakovich in Varna from 17 to 20 January 1958. They present his welcoming, the concert with String Quartet “Beethoven”, a meeting with representatives of the culture and the arts of Varna, the visit to the “Golden Sands” resort and Aladzha Monastery.

It is an interesting fact that the visit of Shostakovich in Varna coincided with the preparation of an author’s concert of Pancho Vladigerov with the Varna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Emil Glavanakov. The two composers are connected by a long-time friendship. Shostakovich visited the rehearsal of the Orchestra.

The exhibition emphasizes first performances of his works in Bulgaria as well. According to Shostakovich himself, the conductor Dobrin Petkov is the best interpretor of his creative work, and next to his name is the name of Kostantin Iliev, who for the first time presented before a Bulgarian audience his Eight Symphony.

After the presentation in Ruse, in the span of the next few months, the exhibition “Dmitri Shostakovich in Bulgaria” will be a guest to the National Music Academy “Prof. Dr. Dmitri Shostakovich”, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, the Union of the Bulgarian Composers, the Plovdiv and Varna State Operas.
