The Competition is one of the most prestigious world events in the sphere of the ballet art. Among its initiators are artists from Bulgaria and members of the international jury of its first edition: Galina Ulanova, Alicia Alonso, Arnold Haskell, Serge Lifar, Fyodor Lopukhov, Tatiana Vecheslova, Elizabeth Kennedy and others. Among the prerequisites for the organization of the Competition in Varna is also the success of the ballet troupe of the Varna Opera, led by Galina and Stefan Yordanov.

The basic aim of the event is gathering the young ballet dancers from all countries and open the way for the most talented to the world stage.

Until 1992, the organization was accomplished by the Ministry of Culture. In 1992, the Foundation International Ballet Competition – Varna was founded with this aim, which until 2011 was headed by Assoc. Prof. Emil Dimitrov.

According to the regulations, there participate performers of junior age from 15 to 19 and up to 26 in three rounds. They dance one pas de deux (adagio, variation and coda) or two variations of their choice from the classical ballet repertoire, created before the end of 19th century, as well as a work of modern choreography, created during the last five years. The shortlisted participants for the second round perform on the same night two works different from the ones performed by them in the first and second rounds. The shortlisted participants for the third round perform on the same night two works different from the ones performed by them in the first and second round from the classical repertoire and a work of modern choreography, created during the last ten years. The only dancer who was awarded the Grand Prix “Varna” in the history of the Competition is Vladimir Vasiliev, which he won at the first edition in 1964.

Since the beginning of the Competition, its events have been at the Summer Theater – Varna.
